What is Case Hardening?

Case hardening is a heat treatment process designed to harden the surface of metal components while maintaining a softer, ductile core. This technique enhances wear resistance on the exterior without compromising the toughness and shock absorption capabilities of the internal structure. Through either the diffusion of alloying elements or phase transformation at high temperatures, the outer layer of the metal becomes significantly harder than the inner core.

Case hardening is typically performed after machining or forming since hardened metals can be challenging to work with.

Why Choose Case Hardening?

  • Efficiency: Surface hardening consumes less energy and time compared to through-hardening an entire component.

  • Performance: A hard surface resists abrasion, while a tough core resists fracture under impact.

  • Cost-Effective: Reduced material consumption and machining effort lead to cost savings in large-scale production.

Metals Suitable for Case Hardening

Although primarily applicable to ferrous metals, case hardening can also be used on select titanium and aluminum alloys. Commonly treated materials include:

  • Low carbon steel

  • High carbon steel

  • Alloy steels

  • Tool steels

  • Stainless steels

  • Forged iron

Common Applications of Case-Hardened Components

  • Gears

  • Camshafts

  • Pins

  • Shafts

  • Fasteners

  • Bearings

  • Rods

  • Transmission parts
