EN9 / C55 Carbon Steel

Overview: EN9 carbon steel, also known as C55, is a medium carbon steel grade typically supplied in as-rolled or forged conditions. Known for its excellent wear resistance and the ability to be flame or induction-hardened, EN9 is ideal for applications requiring high surface hardness.

Forging & Heat Treatment:

• Forging: Preheat uniformly, then raise the temperature to 1100°C. Do not forge below 850°C. Post-forging, cool slowly—preferably in a furnace.

• Hardening: Heat to 550°C–660°C depending on thickness, hold for 1 hour per inch, then quench in oil or water.

• Tempering: Perform immediately after quenching while steel is hand-warm. Reheat to tempering temperature, hold for 1 hour per 25mm thickness, then air cool.

• Normalizing: Typically carried out between 550°C–660°C, followed by air cooling.
