DB6 – Die Block Steel (DIN 1.2714 / AISI L6 / SKT4)

Overview:

DB6, also known as DIN 1.2714, AISI L6, or SKT4, is a premium-grade hot work die steel engineered for high-performance tooling applications. It is highly recommended for closed die forging operations due to its excellent wear resistance, superior toughness, and durability. With a pre-hardened condition and hardness ranging from 360 to 430 BHN, DB6 steel offers outstanding strength and dimensional stability, even under extreme thermal and mechanical loads.

Key Properties:

  • Excellent wear resistance

  • High impact strength

  • Good machinability in pre-hardened condition

  • High hardenability

  • Stable microstructure with fine toughness

  • Excellent ultrasonic quality due to double tempering and high forging reduction

Physical Properties:

  • Density: 7.85 g/cm³

  • Forging Ratio: Minimum 4:1

  • Hardness (BHN): 360 – 430

  • Magnetic: Yes

Heat Treatment Guidelines:

  • Preheating: 600°C – 700°C

  • Hardening Temperature: 850°C – 880°C

  • Quenching: Air or oil

  • Tempering: Temper immediately after quenching while hand warm

  • Tempering Duration: 1 hour per 25 mm of wall thickness

  • Cooling: In furnace or air

Available Standards:

  • DIN: 1.2714

  • AISI: L6

  • JIS: SKT4

  • AFNOR: 55NCDV7

  • Other equivalents: ESKY0S2 731, VMO, W500, UTOP EX2, GMKT4

Applications:

DB6 is extensively used in applications requiring robust performance under high impact and thermal stress conditions:

  • Closed die forging dies

  • Punches and coining dies

  • Hot shear blades

  • Extrusion and pressing tools

  • Die holders and pressure plates
