D2 Die Steel – 1.2601 – High-Performance Cold-Work Tool Steel

Overview:

D2 Die Steel is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel known for its exceptional hardness, wear resistance, and dimensional stability. Thanks to its ability to retain sharp edges and withstand abrasive conditions, D2 is widely used in tooling applications such as blanking, punching, and forming operations.

Key Features:

  • Excellent wear and abrasion resistance

  • High compressive strength

  • Good dimensional stability after hardening

  • Superior edge retention

  • Moderate corrosion resistance due to high chromium content

  • Ideal for precision tools exposed to high stress and wear

Heat Treatment & Machining:

D2 Die Steel undergoes hardening via oil or air quenching followed by tempering. The steel can be heat treated to achieve various levels of hardness (up to 62 HRC) based on application requirements. It is not considered weldable due to its high carbon content but can be machined using conventional techniques like milling, turning, drilling, and grinding.

Applications:

  • Blanking and forming dies

  • Punches and stamping tools

  • Injection mold components

  • Shear blades and slitters

  • Drawing and extrusion dies

  • Knives and industrial blades

  • Bearing races and wear-resistant parts
