EN8 Carbon Steel – Medium Carbon Engineering Steel

EN8 Carbon Steel, also referred to as 080M40, is a medium-carbon, medium-tensile steel commonly used in engineering applications that demand greater strength than mild steel. Known for its excellent machinability and good wear resistance, EN8 is a popular choice for components such as shafts, axles, bolts, gears, studs, and machinery parts.

EN8 is typically supplied in the untreated state but can also be heat-treated to enhance its hardness and tensile strength, especially through flame or induction hardening methods.

Key Characteristics & Advantages

  • Medium tensile strength

  • Excellent machinability

  • Suitable for heat treatment and surface hardening

  • Offers improved wear resistance after induction hardening

  • Maintains consistent metallurgical properties in heat-treated forms

Heat Treatment Options

Process Description
Normalizing Heat to 830–860°C and cool in air for refining grain structure
Hardening Heat to 820–860°C, quench in oil or water for increased hardness
Tempering Reheat to 550–660°C and cool in oil or water for improved ductility
Flame/Induction Hardening Achieves surface hardness of 50–55 HRC for wear resistance

Forging Guidelines

  • Preheat slowly and uniformly

  • Forging temperature: 850°C to 1050°C

  • Do not forge below 850°C

  • Cool slowly after forging, preferably in a furnace
