EN8D Carbon Steel – High Ductility & Machinability Engineering Steel

EN8D Carbon Steel is a medium carbon steel grade known for its high ductility, good machinability, and enhanced wear resistance. It is generally supplied in the normalized or untreated state but can be surface hardened using induction or flame hardening techniques, making it ideal for high-strength engineering applications.

This grade is commonly used for the manufacturing of shafts, gears, studs, axles, crane wheels, bolts, and precision machine components where both strength and machinability are required.

Heat Treatment Processes

Treatment Description
Hardening Heat to 820–860°C and quench in oil or water
Tempering Reheat to 550–660°C, hold ~1 hour/inch of thickness, then cool in oil/water
Normalizing Heat to 830–860°C and air-cool to refine grain structure
Quenching Quench after heating to improve strength and wear resistance

Forging Guidelines

  • Preheat the material uniformly

  • Forging temperature: 850°C to 1050°C

  • Do not forge below 850°C

  • Allow to cool slowly, ideally in a furnace, for best results
