H13 Hot Die Steel – Premium Grade for High Temperature Applications

Overview:

H13 Hot Die Steel is a versatile chromium-molybdenum tool steel known for its exceptional hot hardness, thermal fatigue resistance, and abrasion resistance. It is extensively used in hot work applications, especially in die casting, extrusion, and forging, where exposure to extreme temperatures and mechanical stress is frequent.

H13 also demonstrates excellent toughness and durability, making it suitable for tooling that demands precision and long service life—even under aggressive working conditions. Its polishability allows it to be used in applications that require clear finishes.

Key Features:

  • Superior hot hardness and abrasion resistance

  • Excellent thermal fatigue resistance

  • Good dimensional stability during heat treatment

  • Suitable for high polish applications

  • Balanced machinability and weldability

  • Toughness retained even at elevated temperatures (HRC 38–48)

Physical Properties:

  • Density: 0.280 lb/in³ (7750 kg/m³)

  • Specific Gravity: 7.75

  • Machinability: 65–70% (compared to 1% carbon steel)

Equivalent Grades:

Country Standard / Grade

Heat Treatment Process:

Process Temperature Range Notes
Preheating 650–850°C Gradual heating recommended
Hardening 1020–1050°C Air, oil, or salt bath cooling; hold in salt bath at 500–550°C before air cooling
Tempering 500–650°C Double tempering recommended; higher tempering (~1150°F) improves shock resistance
Annealing 850–870°C Slow cooling in furnace
Forging 900–1100°C Cool slowly and anneal immediately after forging

Hardness Range:

  • For die casting: HRC 44–48

  • For shock resistance: HRC 40–44 (tempered near 1150°F)

  • For general hot work: HRC 38–48

Applications:

  • Die casting components (inserts, cores, shot sleeves)

  • Hot forging dies and tools

  • Extrusion dies

  • Plastic molding cavities and cores

  • Ejector pins, nozzles, and wear-resistant components

Its high polishability also makes it ideal for molds requiring a smooth or mirror finish.
