STAVAX ESR | DIN 1.2083 | AISI 420 Stainless Mold Steel

Overview:

STAVAX ESR is a premium-grade stainless mold steel renowned for its outstanding corrosion resistance, high polishability, and dimensional stability during heat treatment. Produced through the Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) process, STAVAX ESR offers a superior microstructure, making it ideal for plastic molds requiring high surface finish and long service life—especially when processing corrosive plastics like PVC, acetates, or those with abrasive fillers.

Compared to conventional non-stainless mold steels, STAVAX ESR maintains rust-free cooling channels, ensuring uniform cooling, reduced maintenance, and lower production costs over time.

Key Characteristics:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance

  • Superior polishability – ideal for optical and medical mold applications

  • Good wear resistance

  • Stable hardening properties

  • Good machinability in the annealed state

  • High surface finish retention under challenging working environments

Equivalent Grades and Specifications:

Standard Grade
DIN (Germany) 1.2083 / X42Cr13
AISI (USA) 420 Modified
GB (China) 4Cr13
JIS (Japan) SUS420
ISO X42Cr13

Heat Treatment Guidelines:

Soft Annealing:

  • Heat to 890°C in a protective atmosphere

  • Cool at 20°C/hour to 850°C, then 10°C/hour to 700°C

  • Air cool to room temperature

Stress Relieving:

  • Heat to 650°C after heavy machining

  • Hold for 2 hours, cool slowly to 500°C, then air cool

Hardening:

  • Preheat: 600 – 850°C

  • Austenitizing: 1000 – 1050°C

  • Quench: Oil or air

  • Temper to achieve desired hardness and toughness

Applications of STAVAX ESR / 1.2083 / AISI 420:

  • Mold cavities and inserts for chemically aggressive plastics (e.g., PVC, acetates)

  • Molds for optical, medical, and high-gloss finish components

  • Components exposed to wet or humid environments

  • High-quality injection mold bases and Mold parts

  • Ideal for multi-cavity or precision molds where corrosion resistance and polishing are critical
