P20 Plastic Mold Steel (DIN 1.2311 / AISI P20 / GB 3Cr2Mo)

Overview:

P20 Mold Steel is a low-alloy, versatile tool steel primarily supplied in a pre-hardened condition (approx. 28–34 HRC). Known for its good toughness, excellent machinability, and uniform hardness, P20 is widely used in the plastic injection Mold industry and for die-casting dies, particularly for zinc.

P20 offers consistent performance across large sections and is compatible with polishing and surface treatments, making it ideal for complex and high-finish Mold applications.

Key Features of P20 Steel:

  • Pre-hardened tool steel with uniform hardness distribution

  • Excellent machinability and mirror polish finish capability

  • Good dimensional stability with minimal distortion

  • Outstanding weldability and nitriding response

  • Ideal for large plastic Molds and low melting point metal die casting

Equivalent Grades:

Country Standard Grade
USA ASTM A681 P20
Germany DIN EN ISO 4957 1.2311
China GB/T 3Cr2Mo

Mechanical & Physical Properties:

  • Hardness (Pre-Hardened): 28 – 34 HRC

  • Density: 7.86 g/cm³ (7861 kg/m³)

  • Modulus of Elasticity: 207 GPa (30 × 10⁶ psi)

  • Thermal Conductivity: 41.5 W/m·K (24 Btu/ft/hr/°F)

  • Machinability: 60–65% of 1% carbon steel

Heat Treatment Parameters:

  • Hardening Temp: 763 °C (Critical)

  • Preheating: Up to 621–677 °C at a max rate of 222 °C/hr

  • Quenching: Gas pressure or interrupted oil quench to 66–51 °C

  • Tempering: At 482–593 °C for desired hardness between 28–37 HRC

  • No further hardening is needed in most cases as the steel is delivered pre-hardened

Variants:

  • P20+Ni (1.2738): High-hardness variant for larger Molds requiring increased toughness and polishability

  • P20+S: Improved machinability variant due to added sulfur

  • P20+Ni+HH: High-hardness version with better surface resistance and extended tooling life

Applications:

P20 steel is widely used in:

  • Plastic injection Molds

  • Blow Molds and Preform Molds (PET)

  • Die holders, bolsters, and support plates

  • Mold bases for thermoplastics and thermosetting materials

  • Pressure die-casting Molds for low-melting alloys like zinc

  • Hydraulic forming dies, rails, shafts, and wear strips
