1.2316 Plastic Mold Steel (DIN X36CrMo17 / AISI 422 / JIS SUS420J2)

Overview:

DIN 1.2316 is a high-chromium, molybdenum-alloyed plastic Mold steel renowned for its corrosion resistance, high polishability, good toughness, and wear resistance. Thanks to these properties, it is especially suitable for processing aggressive plastics such as PVC and other chemically reactive polymers. This grade also offers excellent thermal conductivity and dimensional stability, making it ideal for Molds requiring precision and durability.

Key Characteristics:

  • High corrosion resistance

  • Pre-toughened and ready-to-use condition

  • Excellent polishability

  • Wear-resistant and heat-resistant

  • Good machinability

  • Hardness up to 49 HRC achievable

Equivalent Grades:

Standard DIN AISI JIS
Grade 1.2316 422 SUS420J2
Name X36CrMo17

Mechanical Properties:

  • Hardness: Up to 49 HRC (after hardening)

  • Strength: 280 – 325 HB (approx. 950 – 1100 N/mm²)

  • Thermal Conductivity: 18 W/m·K

Heat Treatment Guidelines:

Pre-Toughened State:
Material is typically supplied in a pre-toughened condition and may not require further hardening for most applications.

Soft Annealing:

  • Heat at 760–800°C for 4–5 hours

  • Controlled cooling at 10–20 °C/hour to 650 °C

  • Air cooling afterward

  • Maximum achievable hardness: 230 HB

Hardening:

  • Heat to 1030–1050 °C

  • Soak at temperature for 15–30 minutes

  • Quench in oil or water

  • Final hardness: up to 49 HRC

Tempering:

  • Temper immediately after hardening

  • Recommended duration: 1 hour per 20 mm of material thickness

  • Tempering improves dimensional stability and toughness

Applications:

1.2316 is ideal for molds processing chemically aggressive plastics and applications requiring corrosion resistance and mirror polishing. Common uses include:

  • Injection Molds for PVC and chemically aggressive plastics

  • Blowing Molds, preform Molds (PET)

  • Cavitation Molds, compression Molds for SMC

  • High-speed blanking dies and cold extrusion forming dies

  • Standard Mold bases and precision stamping tools
